Michael J. Ovsievsky


Michael Ovsievsky is an accomplished commercial real estate attorney with experience in a diverse range of legal areas, and an emphasis in:

  1. Complex commercial real estate law and finance matters
  2. Mergers and acquisitions
  3. General corporate transactional engagements

Real estate law is his primary area of practice, through which Michael represents property owners, developers and lenders in the acquisition, disposition and financing of residential and commercial real estate projects, including:

  1. drafting and negotiating complex purchase and sale agreements
  2. loan documents
  3. land use documentation (e.g., easements and restrictive covenants)
  4. landlords and tenants in the leasing of office, medical office, industrial and retail space.

In addition, Michael has a background representing corporate and healthcare clients in a variety of real estate, M&A and commercial matters, where he regularly negotiates letters of intent and primary deal documents in asset and stock purchase structures, and affiliation and joint venture arrangements, leads due diligence, and guides transactions through closing.

A native of New Jersey, Michael has been practicing in the Triangle since 2008, and is licensed to practice law in North Carolina, New Jersey and New York. Prior to joining Morningstar Law Group, Michael was a partner in the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina office of K&L Gates LLP, practicing in its Real Estate Investment, Development and Finance Group.

Professional Background/Achievements in Real Estate Law

Michael has significant experience in the healthcare space, having served as outside real estate counsel to hospital and healthcare systems, academic medical centers, and regional and national healthcare service providers. In those engagements, he has developed a keen understanding of the industry-specific issues and considerations healthcare clients must navigate, as well as an in-depth understanding of the regulatory framework that impacts their real estate, corporate and commercial transactions.

Michael has been recognized as a North Carolina Super Lawyers – Rising Star from 2012-2018, a distinction bestowed on no more than 2.5% of all eligible lawyers in North Carolina. In addition, Michael is a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED-AP), a distinction he earned through the Green Building Certification Institute. As a LEED-AP, he has demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles, as well as the LEED Rating System.

In addition to serving clients in private practice, Michael is adjunct professor at The University of North Carolina – Kenan Flagler School of Business where he teaches Real Estate Law to second year MBA students.

Michael has been selected as a Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2012-2018.
